The Essex is a 21 story design award building by Lake Merritt in Oakland. All the art inside is very abstract.  Richard Diebenkorn and Wayne Thiebaud adorn the walls in most common area. When the two Thiebaud located in the Gym faded out from too much sun I was asked to make a proposal for replacement. In my mind two things were important. It had to match the lavender walls and it had to relate to the environment ( Lake Merritt). Those two pictures were taken from the bases of the old fashion bronze lamps stringing along the Lake.
